Existential Approaches to the Treatment of Anxiety

Existential Approaches to the Treatment of Anxiety

Workshop at the Congress "Medical (clinical) psychology:historical traditions and modern practice" - in German with Russian translation

Kursk state medical university
Oct. 11, 2018, afternoon
Anxiety is inherent to existence – there is no way of avoiding it totally. Although it is an indicator of danger and threat and thus serves a life-preserving function it may also become obstructive and paralysing for life.
In order to understand these diverse dimensions of anxiety, one must understand both its roots and its relevance for existence. The existential-analytical understanding sees anxiety directly connected with a lack of rootedness to the basic structures of human existence. This goes along with the anxious feeling of not having enough strength and the ability to really be there – in these surroundings and under these conditions in which one lives. The anxious life lacks a sense of “groundedness” as well. As a result, life’s limitations (including finally one’s death) can neither be faced nor accepted. The subjectively felt need to escape the inevitable limitations of existence brings life into the trap of constant danger.
The workshop will elaborate the existential understanding of anxiety and its connection to a well-grounded existence. Based upon this theoretical understanding of anxiety, different methods of treatment through case-studies and role-playing will be elaborated, including the well-known Franklian "paradoxical intention".
